Description
An image that helped shape how generations of India came to see Maa Lakshmi.
Maa Lakshmi has been revered for centuries as the Goddess of prosperity, abundance, beauty, well-being and auspiciousness. But in the late 19th century, a remarkable artistic movement began to bring familiar images of the divine into Indian homes in a completely new way.
Among the most enduring of these was Raja Ravi Varma's iconic depiction of Lakshmi.
In 1894, the Ravi Varma Fine Art Lithographic Press began producing colour chromolithographs of devotional and mythological subjects. The Lakshmi image released that year became one of the most widely circulated and influential modern depictions of the Goddess. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes it as the most well-known subject among the early lithographs produced by the Ravi Varma Press.
The Goddess is portrayed standing gracefully upon a blooming lotus, holding lotus blossoms in her upper hands while her lower hands offer blessings. A white elephant approaches carrying a garland, while the surrounding water, flowering landscape and swans create an atmosphere of abundance, fertility and auspiciousness.
House of Param presents this Maa Lakshmi artwork as a tribute to that extraordinary legacy. Set within an ornate golden frame, the artwork is designed to bring the timeless presence of Maa Lakshmi into the contemporary home.
